A daily bulletin of news & opinion

21 April 2012

This weekend’s highlights include dance in Hong Kong, a new collaborative exhibition in LA’s Culver City and the release of Santigold’s new album.

1 EXHIBITION: CULVER CITY

—Rush at Carmichael Gallery

This weekend Carmichael Gallery welcomes a group exhibition featuring Brooklyn-based artist Greg Allen-Müller with Los Angeles creatives Marc Horowitz, Daniel DeSure, and Lisa Solberg. Horowitz’s latest work playfully deconstructs his relationship to the entertainment business, while Solberg’s hectic brushstrokes allow us to tag-along with her overactive imagination. Perfect for a relaxing Saurday, Rush draws from a broad array of styles that reflect on the intangible.

5795 Washington Boulevard, Culver City. Until 19 May. Open Tuesday-Saturday 12.00-18.00.

2 RETAIL: LONDON

—Percival Pop-up shop

This summer pop-up shop in London’s Covent Garden features Percival’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. The brand’s eye-catching yet always wearable selection is ideal in the changing spring weather. We love the Japanese print inspired T-shirts and reversible rain macs available in three colours. With a commitment to the outdoors while maintaining a classic style, Percival bring something timeless to the changing seasons.

38 Upper Martins Lane, Covert Garden. Open daily 10.00-19.00. Thursday 10.00-20.00. Sunday 12.00-18.00. Until 29 April

3 FILM: GLOBAL

—Marley: directed by Kevin Macdonald

Kevin Macdonald’s new documentary shines a light on Bob Marley, the first man of reggae and a musical hero. The film interviews surviving members of Marley’s band such as Bunny Wailer and also the singer’s 11 children to build a portrait of a superstar whose message is often lost under the weight of a huge legacy. Macdonald’s film is warm, emotional and also – according to the director – left the Marley siblings feeling they knew their father just a little bit better. Listen to a full interview with Macdonald on this Sunday’s Monocle Weekly radio show.

4 DANCE: HONG KONG

—Blind Chance

The emotional consequences of choice, chance and fate are beautifully interpreted through movement in Blind Chance, a dance production by budding new wave choreographer Dominic Wong. The production’s minimalist stage aesthetic is balanced by intricate performance from Hong Kong’s City Contemporary Dance Company. Wong started in drama and TV, coming to dance relatively late in his twenties and all too aware that life is about choices. Those in Hong Kong should make Blind Chance theirs this weekend.

The Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. Showing Saturday at 15.00, 20.00 and Sunday at 15.00

5 MUSIC: GLOBAL

—Santigold: Master Of My Make Believe

For a musician often celebrated for harnessing the “now”, it’s hard to believe that Santigold hasn’t made an album since her 2008 debut. But now Santi White, the Brooklyn-based singer who artfully matches punk attitude with creative beats has returned with a new record that reflects on four years of success. “People want my power… But they couldn’t take it,” she sings on opener “GO!”. It’s a clear statement of intent to say Santigold doesn’t plan on being irrelevant anytime soon.

“Master of My Make-Believe” is out on Monday in the UK, 1 May in the USsantigold.com
