— Pietro Ruffo: Irhal, Irhal
This week has seen the opening of Irhal, Irhal (Go! Go! In Arabic), the third show by Roman artist Pietro Ruffo at Galleria Lorcan O’Neill. Ruffo’s work adds a thoughtful debate to pre-conceived notions such as liberty, democracy or political identity. This show is an elaborate expression of the protests that have emerged in the Arab World since the winter of 2010/11. Here the Arab Spring is depicted through a series of world maps that refer to both Islamic geometry and the distilled hues of aged photography.

5. MUSIC: GLOBAL
— Cody Chestnutt: Landing on a Hundred
You feel Atlanta, Georgia soul and funk singer-songwriter Cody Chestnutt has never had the luck he might be owed, even if he’s always appearing in the right places. Be that working for iconic rap label Death Row Records in the late 1990s, penning the Roots’ 2002 anthemic hit “The Seed (2.0)” and even turning up in the Strokes’ video for “Last Nite”. But now Landing On A Hundred, only his second album in a decade, showcases the old-school soul talent that Chestnutt has in abundance. These songs could be feel-good lost 1970s classics, if you didn’t get the feeling the 2000s nearly lost them anyway.
