Chapter 1

Machimbre

Machimbre is a Buenos Aires-based interdisciplinary studio that teams up with Argentinian artisans to make its nautical-cord chairs entirely by hand. Yet for its handsome M5 model, art director Julieta Barrionuevo and architects Zelmira Frers and Michelle Parisiers are looking to shift the production’s relaxed Latin American pace up a gear. Here they talk to Monocle’s Chiara Rimella about the brand’s ambitions.

From backyard tinkerers to literary greats, people from all walks of life have found a shed to be the perfect place to bring their ideas to life. But what about the design of the sheds themselves? Jane Field-Lewis is a stylist, art director and author based in London and has recently written ‘The Anatomy of Sheds’, a book that documents some of the most innovative shed designs from around the world.

Danish design

As usual Danish design was a key feature at this edition of Mason & Objet. But while established brands took safer bets on updating their collections, fledgling companies such as We Do Wood offered more daring takes on classic design. We Do Wood designer Sebastian Jørgensen talks Nolan Giles through his flat-packable Safari chair and lends him some tips on how to edit classic design for a contemporary audience.
