When it comes to towels, few can compete with Kontex. And as the specialist manufacturer founded in 1934 in Imabari, on Japan’s Shikoku island, will tell you, there’s an art to making the perfect cloth for drying off. During production, threads are strengthened by coating them with starch and wax, but if any traces of these are found on the finished towel, it won’t absorb water properly. So Kontex’s are washed at a dye house in Saijo City using water from the melted – and impossibly pure – snow-caps of the nearby Mt. Ishizuchi. The result? Items such as this Heather Waffle towel, which is made from cloud-like cotton, comes in hand-towel or shower-towel sizes, and is lightweight and travel-friendly, making it ideal for sweaty sauna or yoga sessions.
