Melbourne travel guide
The editors’ selection
It might seem impossible to get to know Australia’s main metropolis but Monocle’s editors will take you to its exceptional haunts and much more beside.
First Nations trams, citywide
Six of Melbourne’s famous trams have been newly decorated by First Nations artists as part of Rising, the city’s new winter arts festival, and will be in operation for the next 12 months. Head to the station and keep your eyes peeled to find them in beautiful colours on the routes below.
3, 3a, 5, 6, 16, 19, 48, 58, 59, 64, 67, 70, 72, 75 and 109.Golda, Prahran
At Golda, opposite the famed Prahran Market, Israeli chef Rotem Papo’s menu draws on the North African, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences present in his home country’s cuisine. For a starter we’d suggest the house-made hummus served with smoked paprika oil and wood-fired Iraqi laffa bread. Follow it up with a “reuben-style” brisket, sauerkraut and pickled chillies.

Dom’s Social Club, CBD
This multi-storey venue in the heart of the city brings together three different bars and restaurants, all connected by a handsome timber staircase. On the first floor, you’ll find woodfired pizzas (we suggest the marinara); on the second, there’s a billiards room and a cocktail lounge serving Australian spirits; and at the top – well, we suggest that you take in the view of the city skyline from the building’s roof garden and bar.
