Sydney travel guide
The editors’ selection
It might seem impossible to get to know Australia’s main metropolis but Monocle’s editors will take you to exceptional bars and cafés while pointing you towards an exhibition with a difference.
The General Gordon Hotel, Sydenham
After almost being levelled by a fire in 2018, this historic drinking hole has reopened with a new kitchen overseen by chef Kirsten Baker. Its bright and leafy interior is decked out with new tiles made in England to match the originals that once adorned the space. It’s a good spot to drop in for a drink or settle in for a meal – we suggest the 12-hour roasted beef short rib. You can thank us later.

Vini Divini, CBD
This cosy wine bar is the perfect place to drop in for a post-work drink. And while its menu includes plenty of options from famed wine regions in France, Italy, and Australia, co-owner Philippe Gilbert’s tasting list really shines thanks to bottles from overlooked wineries in Armenia, Greece, Turkey, and Georgia. There are small plates, such as kingfish crudo and stracciatella with summer vegetables, to complement your tipple too.
