Salone del Mobile 2017
Basking under the Milanese spring sun, visitors to Salone del Mobile enjoyed a particularly vivacious 56th edition of the world’s leading furniture fair. Here we unveil the event’s best design pieces.
Milan Design Week is by no means limited to the wares on show in the Salone del Mobile fair halls in Rho. All across the city – from Tortona and Brera to the up-and-coming 5Vie neighbourhood – designers display their latest goods in historic villas and sleek shop windows. Here is our pick of the best of Fuorisalone.
01 B&B Italia, Bankside armchair
Jasper Morrison has joined B&B Italia’s stable of big-name designers, which includes Marcel Wanders and Antonio Citterio, with his two-piece Bankside collection. It’s quite a debut: dreamed up for London’s Tate Modern gallery, the collection is comprised of a low-slung sofa and this compact armchair made from a smoked-oak support frame and topped with fabric or leather covers.
02 Astep, VV Cinquanta floor lamp
Lighting brand Astep couldn’t have chosen a better location for its debut: the splendid Palazzo Litta houses its first ever collection, which includes techy lanterns as well as splendid mid-century re-editions. This VV Cinquanta floor lamp was first designed in the 1950s by Vittoriano Viganò, brutalist architect and personal friend of founder Alessandro Sarfatti’s grandfather Gino.
03 Acdo, Pet Kyoto lamps
Following a craft-lighting series that has seen lamps made in Ethiopia, Chile and Colombia, the latest instalment of Spanish brand Acdo’s Pet lamp project is the result of two years spent in Kyoto. Skilfully hidden underneath these handsome woven-bamboo shades are recycled plastic bottle parts that give the lamp its structure.
04 Geoluxe, Unveil installation
Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa created an eyebrow-raising installation for Thai firm Geoluxe, part of the SCG group. A pretty courtyard in Tortona’s Via Savona was the showcase for the marble-like marvel that was created to emulate nature. The product? A strong, sustainable alternative to the metamorphic mainstay.
05 Hay, PC table lamp
Danish design giant Hay and UK maestro Sebastian Wrong made a big splash in the lighting world with the launch of Wrong London. The debut collection from the colourful brand featured gems such as this emerald-hued PC table lamp with a round polycarbonate head from Frenchman Pierre Charpin.
06 Karakter, Comodo cabinet
Young Danish brand Karakter’s design roster features up-and-coming creatives from South Africa, as well as Italian heavyweights. Milanese master Achille Castiglioni created this Comodo cabinet with Giancarlo Pozzi in 1988. It is said that Castiglioni had a sweet tooth: hence Karakter’s decision to present this tall hold-all filled with candies, its designer’s favourite treat.
07 Nendo, 50 manga chairs installation
The cloistered courtyard of the historic Chiostro Minore di San Simpliciano in central Milan proved a striking backdrop for Japanese studio Nendo’s mesmerising installation. Fifty mirrored chairs were lined up in a square formation, each one adorned with a design element wrought from metal and borrowed from manga comic books – whether a teardrop, a speech bubble or a halo of “effect” lines.
08 Punkt. x Ecal
In recent years Petter Neby’s Punkt. has made waves with its back-to-basics phone but this year its message about making technology simpler rings true with a new generation of designers from Lausanne’s lauded Ecal university. The collection of one-offs includes a refined student-designed clock, projector and digital radio among its highlights. Each captures the Swiss firm’s fuss-free look with aspiration and aplomb.
09 Rimadesio, Wind bookcase
Essential bookcase Wind debuts in a new comely matte finish that is realised by Rimadesio in its own Giussano headquarters: the Italian brand has taken to looking after all the little details in-house to perfect all stages of production.
10 Valerie Objects, Stackable chair
In its usual colourful and sculptural vein, design duo Muller Van Severen is releasing a series of stackable chairs for Antwerp-based Valerie Objects. These geometric aluminium perches are lively when set around the table and irresistible when neatly tidied away.
