—The Pikey

One of Los Angeles’ most eagerly anticipated new restaurants opens this weekend – The Pikey, from Jared Meisler and Sean MacPherson. Located on Sunset Boulevard in a building that formerly housed the city’s most venerable British dive bar, The Pikey brings classic pub food to Hollywood. Ralph Johnson, former executive chef at New York’s Spotted Pig brings offers a menu with highlights including Welsh rarebit and a classic burger with cheddar and Worcestershire aioli. Also, check out the bar’s ingenious cocktail creations, toddies, and brews.

2 FILM: LONDON

—Jiří Trnka at BFI Southbank

Throughout April, BFI Southbank will screen a series of films by Czech animation artist Jiří Trnka. Having channeled his childlike imagination into puppetry, his films earned him recognition as the Walt Disney of the east. This retrospective features Trnka’s key works such as The Czech Year from 1947, his adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s Nightingale. This weekend, don’t miss the screenings of Prince Bayaya and Old Czech Legends.

—The Magnum Contact Sheet

Ricoh’s photography gallery Ring Cube in Tokyo’s Ginza is holding an exhibition to celebrate photojournalist group Magnum’s 65th anniversary. The work of 68 Magnum photographers, including the legendary Henri Cartier-Bresson is on show, as well as recent talents such as Jonas Bendiksen who joined Magnum in 2008. Don’t miss the unique opportunity to see the photographers’ contact sheets, revealing the selection and editing process of photographers working at the top of their game.

4 EXHIBITION: LONDON

—Matthew Monahan at Stuart Shave/Modern Art

This weekend the Stuart Shave Modern Art gallery in London hosts the third solo exhibition by California-born artist Matthew Monahan. Playing with a mix of materials such as foam, oil, paper, plasterboard and wax, Monahan carves, draws, casts and builds up his art. Drawing on modern art and ancient totems, the exhibition features seven new bronze sculptures and linear drawings.

—Lauryn Hill

Of all the larger than life divas, hip-hop turned soul singer Lauryn Hill knows it pays to remain a bit elusive. So elusive in fact, that she’s only managed one studio album in 14 years (1998’s near flawless classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill). But live dates pop up every five years or so just to remind everyone what a spectacular soul talent the ex-Fugee still is. She’ll be in London at the IndigO2 (O2 Arena) on Saturday, before heading to dates in Paris on the 16th and Zermatt in Switzerland for the 19th. There’s even rumour of a new record this year. Careful Lauryn, don’t over do it.
