4 August 2012

If you want to diversify during the Olympic themed days ahead, below are our picks of what to do, see and listen to if in London this weekend.

1. RETAIL: LONDON

—Universal Works

British workwear-inspired clothing brand Universal Works has opened its first shop, in London. Launched in 2009 and distributed in the US, Scandinavia, Belgium and Japan, Universal Works is in its element in a cosy, 20 sq m shop on Lambs Conduit Street, home to handful of other Monocle favourites such as Oliver Spencer and Folk. Brand owner David Keyte also plans to stock one style of jean from Levi’s, and Converse footwear; his top choices for rounding out the Universal Works look. 37 Lambs Conduit Street. Open Monday to Saturday 11.00 -19.00universalworks.co.uk

2. FILM: LONDON

—London – The Modern Babylon

Having burst onto the documentary film scene in the late-1970s with his seminal films on the Sex Pistols, Julien Temple is a London icon whose new film London –The Modern Babylon dives deeper into the history of his home city. Using archive footage and interviews with artists, writers and London’s maverick thinkers such as Ray Davies and Tony Benn, Temple pieces together an ode to the city that never feels nostalgic, yet brings the past alive. If anybody was wondering what half the references in fellow film director Danny Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony were about, here might be a good place to start. From the weekend the film will show at selected London cinemas including Hackney Picturehouse, Rio Dalston, Ritzy Brixton, Gate Picturehouse Notting Hill and BFI Southbankbfi.org.uk

3. MUSIC: LONDON

—Blur: 21

Quintessentially “London” indie upstarts Blur turn the ripe old age of 21 this year. To celebrate their reappraisal as national treasures and stature as the closing act of the London Olympics’ Hyde Park concert next week, the band have released an extensive new boxset. 21 features all seven studio albums, four discs of 65 rare tracks, three dvds, a 7-inch vinyl and an accompanying book. The band’s love/hate relationship with the UK means not all of it will be singalong Britpop anthems either. Blur’s regular stylistic shifts from punk, to orchestral pop, to African rhythms and US-style slacker distortion over the years means there’s something for everyone. And none of them are native Londoners anyway. Blur’s “21″ boxset is available to buy nowblur.co.uk

4. FOOD FESTIVAL: LONDON

—Feast

From Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa to Fergus Henderson’s St John Bread & Wine, Britain’s finest will transform St Thomas street into a local restaurant market scene. Award–wining national charity FoodCycle will also take part in the event, so get involved and help out the needy by simply enjoying a meal. Guy’s Hospital, St Thomas Street.
