Maison & Objet 2017
January is a packed month in the design calendar: straight after Köln’s IMM, interiors trade show Maison & Objet opens in Parc des Expositions in Paris. Across its eight halls there’s space for thousands of companies of all…
Basking under the Milanese spring sun, visitors to Salone del Mobile enjoyed a particularly vivacious 56th edition of the world’s leading furniture fair. Here we unveil the event’s best design pieces.
01 Arper, Cila chairs
Veneto-based Arper’s strengths may lie office furniture but this range of wrap-around Cila chairs showcases the company’s ambitions to venture into the home too. Designed by Catalan studio Lievore Altherr Molina, they come with an upholstered seat in colours that can be mixed and matched.
02 Flos, Arrangement lights
This stunning collaboration between Michael Anastassiades and Italy’s renowned lighting brand Flos was a standout at Euroluce. Playful and malleable, the lights can be arranged in various patterns to form beautiful pendant-like structures.
03 Maruni, Hiroshima chair
Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa’s stackable version of the classic Hiroshima returns, upholstered in colourful egg-yolk yellow: a welcome touch of liveliness for this most essential of chairs.
04 Marset, lamp
Spanish designer Xavier Mañosa formed these beautiful ceramic shades for Spanish lighting specialists Marset. Hanging nicely at the brand’s Euroluce stand, the quiet pieces are representative of the brand’s rich heritage and its continuing mission to champion young design talent.
05 B&B Italia, Formiche tables
B&B Italia’s collaboration with Piero Lissoni moved into an elegant and understated realm with the Formiche table, a name that translates as “ant” in English. An exercise in simplicity and refinement, the table tops are a mere 8mm thin and come in transparent glass, light oak, titanium-painted metal, or porcelain ceramic, white or grey stone.
06 Mattiazzi, Quindici chaise longue
The small village of San Giovanni al Natisone is one of the three tips of Northern Italy’s “Chair Triangle”. Mattiazzi are based here and their unparalleled knowledge of chairs helped to develop this sculptural chaise longue by brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.
07 Pedrali, Giravolta lantern
This playful rechargeable lantern by outdoor-furniture brand Pedrali has a suggestive name: Giravolta means “twirl” in Italian and alludes to the lamp’s swivelling diffuser as well as paying homage to Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery.
08 Plank, Monza armchair
German designer Konstantin Grcic’s Monza armchair, created for South Tyrolean brand Plank, is now ready to head outdoors: its seat has become slatted but a weather-resistant oil coating lets the original warm colour of the wood shine through.
09 Cassina, Leggera chair
Gio Ponti’s iconic Leggera chair wowed furniture fans at Cassina’s showroom at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair more than half a century after it took the design world by storm in the 1950s. Manufactured from solid ash just kilometres away from Salone del Mobile in Cassina’s workshop, this chair’s legacy spans well beyond Italy’s borders.
10 Diiis, Glaubi coat hanger
Diiis is a young Swiss design company with a penchant for the minimal. The Glaubi coat hanger is customisable and highly functional (not to mention beautiful), and its ochre colour adds a splash of energy to the piece without making it too showy.
