The Chiefs 2024
Monocle’s unique global gathering for the sharpest minds in business.
The world’s leading international garden trade fair, spoga+gafa, annually unites over 2,000 exhibitors from 59 countries at Germany’s Koelnmesse, highlighting the trends and innovations in outdoor furniture, grills and garden equipment, sports and games, plants and flowers. Here’s what you’ll want in your backyard next summer.
01 Emu – Ciak
Known for the Rio chair, 1951-established Italian brand Emu has added a new product to its collection: Ciak. This foldable director’s chair by German designer Stefan Diez combines a lightweight aluminium frame and high-performance fabric with a contemporary yet evergreen form.
02 Cane-line – Frame shelving system
The new sideboard by 25-year-old Danish design company Cane-line shows that the boundary between indoor and outdoor furniture is rapidly blurring and that designers are creating pieces that can be used both in and out of the house depending on the season.
03 Gommaire – Marie chair
One of the youngest big names in outdoor furniture is Gommaire, founded by Gommaire Cleybergh and Bert Verelst in January 2015. Former florist Cleybergh turned his Antwerp home into a showroom for his new collection, which includes highlights such as the woven Marie chair.
04 Jan Kurtz – Bradford
Jan Kurtz’s homonymous furniture brand has been frequenting spoga+gafa for 25 years. The German manufacturer creates locally crafted indoor and outdoor furniture and this year presented several pieces from reclaimed wood, such as this solid-oak table and bench set.
05 Rösle – No.1 F50 Air
Winner of the Home & Trend “Innovation of the Year 2015” award, this grill by the 1888-established Allgäu-based family company features a classic form as well as modern functions such as the lid thermometer and new air-control system.
06 Schaffner – Rigi
Schaffner has been crafting garden furniture in Switzerland since 1954. Its classic Rigi chair is handmade from local wood and steel at the company’s workshop in Müllheim and stands out through its timeless design.
07 Glatz – Alexo
Swiss business Glatz has been innovating sunshades for over 120 years. This year the brand unveiled the Italian-made Alexo Limited Edition, a parasol with a retro touch thanks to its jacquard design and traditional form.
08 Nardi – Net
This innovative chair is made of fibre-glass resin monocoque and throws beautiful shadows. Designed by 1990-founded Italian brand Nardi and suitable for the outdoors as well as the house, this model is available in five different hues, from mustard to dove-grey.
09 Houe – Click rocking chair
Designed by Henrik Pedersen for 2007-founded Danish company Houe, this rocking chair is part of a series of furniture created from sustainable bamboo – a big trend – and colourful plastic lamellas that can be clicked on and off to give the chair a new look every season.
10 Cacoon – Songo
A weaver’s nest inspired British designer Nick McDonald to create the cacoon, a floating lounger made by a team of professional sail-makers. The Songo is more sophisticated than its predecessor and perfectly suited for lazy summer days.
