Pitti Uomo: 97th edition
The year is young but the menswear industry has already wrapped up one of its key events: the autumn/winter edition of Pitti Uomo. The menswear tradeshow, which took place this week in a crisp yet sunny Florence, is now in…
A warm and sunny 90th edition of the Pitti Uomo menswear tradeshow put visitors in the mood for summer. Our picks from the halls of the Fortezza da Basso will make for excellent holiday attire; here's what we suggest you pack for the spring/summer 2017 season.
Drumohr, cardigan
Since taking over Scottish heritage brand Drumohr 10 years ago, Italian group Ciocca has brought all production back to its home country. This double-breasted cardigan is made from Italian cotton and has a comfortable fit perfect for the everyday; when buttoned up, it's ready for something a little more formal.
Salvatore Piccolo, T-shirts
Neapolitan designer Salvatore Piccolo has put his experience in shirt-making into creating a new hybrid: woven from a cotton and linen blend, this top features a shirt's fabric but a T-shirt's shape. In versions with or without a buttoned collar, the T-shirts are available in black, grey or green; all are made in Naples and are versatile enough to suit a southern Italian summer’s day.
Nikben, swimwear
From the first, second, and third collection of young Swedish brand Nikben respectively, these flamingo, camel, and tucan-patterned swimshorts are made from micro polyester to ensure lightness and prompt drying. Like all of the brand's lively swimshorts, they feature prints inspired by the founders’ travels, dreams and fantasies.
Etnia Barcelona, sunglasses
Eyewear brand Etnia was founded 15 years ago but only started producing acetate sunglasses in 2011. For its first 1950s and 1960s-inspired venture into metal frames, the Barcelona-based brand chose to work with French stainless steel. All crystal lenses come courtesy of Italian staple Barberini.
Baracuta, jacket
Following a design-led approach that is rooted in the brand’s own history, Baracuta’s iconic G9 jacket stays faithful to the original garment developed in the 1930s by the Miller brothers. Other than in its traditional colours, the jacket will now also be available in a choice of new and vibrant colours suited to spring; the range is also growing with new versions of the classic made with technical fabrics.
Cuisse de Grenouille, shorts
For Parisian label Cuisse de Grenouille’s latest collection, brothers Lucas and Séverin Bonnichon looked to the Amalfi Coast for inspiration: these red-and-white striped shorts are a nod to the parasols that line the beaches of Positano and Ravello. They are made in Portugal from seersucker cotton, which “gives them a vintage ‘waffle’ look while keeping them light for summer”, says Séverin.
Second Skin, robe
This super-soft robe comes from Second Skin, a minimalistic Tokyo-based label dreamt up by friends Tomoki Kikuchi and Yindigo A Mochizuki. It is stitched in northeast Japan from organic cotton; thanks to its polyurethane core it stretches easily and is durable enough to last a lifetime.
Three Animals, jacket
Ming Yin, founder of Three Animals, grew up in China but lives in Paris. Her Etiquette Indigo line comprises pieces that are handmade in the village of San Bao in southern China and proves that "Made in China” need not always have negative connotations. This indigo number combines Yin’s eastern and western influences: it is inspired by a European hunting jacket and made from traditional Chinese twill.
Monsieur Lacenaire, jumper
This Parisian menswear label – founded by Hermès, Kenzo and Joseph alumnus Garance Broca – has built a name for itself as a master of playful knitwear. Its spring/summer 2017 offerings hammer home this reputation and our pick of the lot is the Bateau jersey: it is woven from Egyptian cotton and boasts an insartia-knitted print that is inspired by the toy boats floating across the pools of Paris’s Jardin des Tuileries.
Jupe by Jackie, shorts
These quirky spectacle-patterned shorts come courtesy of Dutch label Jupe by Jackie’s new offshoot line, J-B-J. Headed up by Julien Villevoye, the son of the Jupe By Jackie founder, J-B-J creates low-key T-shirts, shirts and shorts that are made from Japanese and Italian fabrics and hand-embroidered using time-honoured Indian techniques.
